7 High Street sits in the middle of Windermere town, minutes from the station and the lanes down to the lake. A starting point for your days out, free and paid.
No ticket needed, just comfortable shoes.
The classic Windermere viewpoint. Wainwright called it his favourite first view of Lakeland.
Getting there: about a 20 to 30 minute walk uphill from the station, with a panoramic sweep over the lake and the fells.
Stroll the lake shore at Bowness-on-Windermere. Jetties, ice cream, and the comings and goings of the lake steamers.
Getting there: about 1.5 miles south, roughly 30 to 40 minutes on foot or a few minutes by bus.
Hillside gardens above Troutbeck run by the Lakeland Horticultural Society. Free entry; donations keep the gates open.
Getting there: about 10 minutes by car.
Book the popular ones before you travel.
Boats leave from the Bowness piers for cruises the length of England’s longest lake. Timetables change with the season; buy ahead on summer weekends.
Family attraction in Bowness bringing the tales to life.
Getting there: about 10 to 15 minutes from Windermere by bus or car.
Beatrix Potter’s farmhouse, kept as she left it. National Trust, timed entry. Advance booking is essential in season.
Getting there: about 25 minutes by car.
The National Park visitor centre with lakeside gardens and family activities. Grounds entry is free; adventure activities are ticketed.

Within a short walk of High Street.

Modern dining on Lake Road. Book ahead on weekends; it fills up fast.
Easy brunch and good coffee in the town centre, ideal before a walk up Orrest Head.
High Street and Bowness get very busy on summer weekends. Book dinner the day before, not the day of, or you will be queuing with everyone else.
Windermere is the end of the line, in a good way.
Trains run to Oxenholme Lake District on the West Coast Main Line, then the branch line to Windermere station.
Getting there: Windermere station is a few minutes’ walk from High Street.
M6 to junction 36, then the A591 through Kendal to Windermere.
The 555 links Lancaster, Kendal, Windermere and Keswick. The open-top 599 runs between Bowness and Grasmere in season.
Check the time of the last train back from Oxenholme, especially on Sundays. Town-centre parking is limited, so ask before you set off if you arrive by car. Village lanes are narrow and often have sheep; drive slowly and expect walkers.
The fells reward respect.
Conditions change fast, even in summer. Carry a waterproof layer and check the forecast before heading up.
Windermere’s water stays cold all year. Take care near the shore and on jetties, and supervise children closely.
Stick to marked paths and bring a torch for unlit lanes. Tell someone your route if you head into the fells alone.
